THE 5 BODIES OF TEACHING
Moving Beyond Asana
WITH BEVERLY AKHURST:

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE A CERTIFIED YOGA TEACHER..…. You completed a 200 Hour Training, maybe even a 500 Hour Training. Now what?
Maybe you can’t even figure out if or how you will start teaching or feel scared to start. Maybe you ARE teaching and have been for a long time but you keep bumping up against the same issues or feel unsure of where to go next.

How Do You Feel?? ……….
- Do you feel unsure?
- Scared to step in front of people?
- Feel like you don’t have enough knowledge to keep people safe?
- Feel like an imposter?
- Feeling stagnant and in need of a refresh?…..

Are You?…….
- Struggling to find your voice?
- Unsure what is next?
- Wanting to Keep growing?
- Needing tuition on the 8 limbs of Yoga? (Asha Tanga)
- Wanting to find ways to support your students with props and variations for tired?, aging?, injured bodies?

Do You?…….
- Know what the Yamas and Niyamas are and why they are important to a Yoga Practice?
- Find yourself repeating the exact same things your teacher said to you without knowing why you say them?
- Stop bringing philosophy into your classes the moment someone says they are just there for the exercise?…

The things that come up for all teachers are as different as the bodies we all teach, but some of the them are struggles that may hold you back as a teacher or wear you down. Other may simply be the concepts you did not have time to follow in depth in a 200 Hour program. Maybe you have such a healthy body that it is hard for you to relate to students who may come to you with injury or health related issues.
If you are one of the very many who took a teacher training years ago but held back in sharing the practice, you might now feel like the person tied to the bungee cord who didn’t jump when they said jump. The longer you hang out with the cord dangling from the end of your feet the harder it is to jump. You need someone to gently talk you through the reasons to trust that the cord will now hold you.

I have been teaching for 13 years and have been gifted the chance to train with some amazing teachers, but have also experienced the teachers who put no thought or care into their practice.
It is always somewhat surprising to experience how many teachers seem content to repeat what they originally learned, without exploring and questioning what is is rhetoric and what is truth for their students and for themselves.
The consistent message I hear from my students is this - “I cannot believe that I have learned more in one class from you than I have in years of doing yoga”, or “I always felt pain in all my classes…this is the first time it wasn’t a painful experience”. or “ I thought yoga was just a bunch of poses? This is the first time I actually was able to breathe or relax in savasana or the first time anyone told me what Namaste meant and expressed”.
The list of comments could go on, but the point is…..I really don’t believe I should be hearing these things as often as I do. Am I glad that I am here for my students? Yes!
Would I prefer though to hear that they learned much more from their teachers about how to create a practice that supports their life? Yes.
This goes for teachers as well. I hear from teachers that no one ever explained the philosophy of Yoga to them, or no one ever talked about how to teach a student to stand based on how individuals are shaped differently or, what the point of savasana is.

You found a program to guide you on your way to becoming a yoga teacher so you could follow your passion and share it with others. Now you are out there teaching or trying to teach and classes are hold every level and age of student and questions are starting to build up. Your voice and your heart now need to join you on this journey. If you have chosen this as your life’s path you are already starting from the very best place.
Every teacher has a journey and a dharma worth sharing, it is just discovering what yours is. This program will help guide you to the students that need what you have to teach.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

The 5 Bodies Of Teaching will help guide you through the challenges on your journey.
You will be provided with personal support focused on allowing you to clearly form your goals and priorities as a teacher.
You will strengthen or add to your knowledge in a number of areas (physical, energetic, mind, senses).
You will grow in confidence and ability.
You will do this working with an Experienced Teacher (ERYT 500) who is invested in supporting you through the full spectrum of your journey.
I have over 16,000 hours of teaching experience, and, am myself always training in order to find the best ways to guide and assist my students. I am known as "a teachers teacher", and have been told I am "a teacher who is able to read a students body in depth" and "provide classes that engage, and involve students in all aspects of their practice while making it accessible to every level of practitioner".

My goal is to be part of blossoming an ever growing body of teachers who are intent on being part of the change that is happening not only in the Yoga world but in all of life….the real Yoga. A change that embraces our differing abilities as teachers and celebrates the uniqueness of all the people who honour us with their time and trust.

Depending on your goals and where you are on your journey here is a small list of some of the
items that may become part of your program.

  • Learn to use your unique voice as a teacher

  • How to cue movement and poses so that it makes sense to your students

We work so hard to get somewhere, to realize a dream, to arrive at some destination, that we often forget that though some satisfaction may be waiting at the end of our endurance and effort, there is great and irreplaceable aliveness in the steps along the way.
