This is a Google calendar. It can be added to your calendar or printed. If you are looking on your phone please turn screen sideways to see full schedule. Apparently IPhones don't show the far side of the monthly calendar so I have chosen the agenda version. You can click on the tab in the top right corner if you are wanting the Month view.

Always check the schedule to ensure you are coming at the right time. There are pre-scheduled dates where a class does not run. Please inform yourself.

Please do yourself the favour of being at least 5 minutes early.

If you find yourself late:
Please take a moment outside, make sure your phone is OFF (no vibrate), shoes and jacket off, pause to make sure we have completed the opening meditation and then quietly join in with as little disruption as possible.
If you are more than 10 minutes late please consider another class. Jumping into class without knowing what is happening in counterproductive to what you are trying to achieve.(no brand new students late please, take time to look at a map so you know where to be)
Time cannot be taken from those who are present on time to catch someone up who has arrived late. (Asteya - one of the 5 Yamas)

“Yoga does not remove us from the reality or responsibilities of everyday life but rather places our feet firmly and resolutely in the practical ground of experience. We don’t transcend our lives; we return to the life we left behind in the hopes of something better.” ~ Donna Farhi

NEW CLASS: Stability for Living with Beverly Akhurst -

Similar to Wednesday Mornings class learning various forms of stabilizing is a primary way to build strength and stability in all aspects of the body. Stability not only within the tissues but the breath and the mind creates innumerable benefits.
We will work through the ways to utilize the structure of your feet to engage muscles and fascia up the chain of your body, create strength around the hips, lower core and back. Learn how the function of the breath and diaphragm create an increasingly stable body, mind and energy level. It doesn’t have to be accepted that getting older means losing stability. Comments such as I have always been accident prone don’t have to be part of your vocabulary. Walking down a street need not be a thing that trips you up or twist your ankle.

SUMMER Session:
5 Class Session July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. Maximum 8 students
Tuesdays 6:00 – 7:15 pm

Ease into Evening with Beverly Akhurst -

As summer settles in and activities and time with friends and family drag us in every direction it can be easy to forget to connect to moments of internal peace. Already busy bodies and minds  feel the need to "not waste" a moment of the long days and beautiful weather. Remembering to also connect to our internal somatic bodies becomes even more important.
This class will offer you a space to recharge, reboot and remember that what you need inside is as important as outside. Growth happens in balance with activity and rest.
There will be movement and breath work (somatic experience) combined with Yin and some Yoga Nidra. This practice is good for anyone and does not have limits. You can be 95 and still do this practice.

(If you are pregnant and in your 3rd trimester talk to your doctor, deep stretches will be part of this practice and may not be what you and your baby need at this time.)

SUMMER Session: June 25th to August 26th
7 Class Series  (There will be 2 Tuesdays without a class in this session. August 7th and ...)

Psoas Mobility and Pelvic Power with Beverly Akhurst -

The Psoas are the only muscles connecting the lower body to the upper body, and it is one of the largest, yet it is one of the least talked about muscles. Losing  "celebrity notice" to muscles such as hamstrings, gluteous and abdominal muscles.
This class explores the Psoas and how it affects aspects of a functional body.
The Psoas when "overused or never used" will have an effect on the structural alignment of the musculo-skeletal system, will affect the nervous system and the messages the CNS relays to your brain, and can have a secondary effect on your breath, hormones and even organ function.
In this series we will flow through slow, gentle Yin poses combined with some restorative hold, flowing movement and will add in strengthening practices for weakened and tired tissues once they have hydrated and softened.
Learn to use this muscle group not as your primary stabilizer but as the secondary support structure it was meant to be for a well aligned skeletal system.
Open to all levels of student. Be ready for changes on all levels.
Explore how to utilize and release the pelvic floor and region to assist the Psoas through your life.

SUMMER Session: June 25th to August 26th
7 Class Series (No Class July 11th or August 22nd), Maximum 8 students
Wednesdays 8:15 - 9:30am

Stability = Mobility with Beverly Akhurst - (A popular class, runs out of space. Book ahead) 2 DROP IN SPACES

Learn to create a stable presence within your body. Utilize stance, alignment and build greater balance. With balance comes a stronger, healthier body less prone to "accidents" to unexpected falls and injuries. You will release tension in certain areas of pelvic bowl while building strength in the support structures of your body. The more stable you become, the less rigid you become and the more able to flow with the vagaries of life. As we all age stability and mobility will be the things that keeps us living a healthy and fulfilling life.

SUMMER OUTDOOR YOGA with The Granville Island Hotel

Very happy to again join with the Granville Island Hotel to share a morning Yoga practice @ Ron Basford Park (otherwise known as the Hill to anyone who knows Granville Island).

We will meet on the platforms that face the Performance Works building.

There is nothing quite as lovely as doing Yoga in nature. The trees overhead, the light drifting through the leaves as the birds create the music for our practice.
This is one of the best ways to train yourself to not allow the mind to distract you from your center. Being in a studio has benefits...especially when there is inclement weather.....but getting outside the walls and bringing your yoga into the world is the real training. It is the reminder that we are not separate from the world around us, but rather an integral part of it.

Beverly's class will be an organic expression of what is needed each time we meet.
Combining various styles of Yoga, combined with Somatics, movement, breath, mindfulness and energy awareness each class will open and strengthen the physical body, start moving the energy body, wake up and clear the mind and allow you to step into your day open to whatever it might be.

This class is not connected to the passes at the studio. It is a by donation class offered in conjunction with the Hotel.
Suggested donation $10 - $20 or whatever feels appropriate.
If you have a mat please bring it, otherwise there will be some mats available.,-123.1321773,18z click here for a map to the park if you have any questions

QiGong/Yin Combined Class with Ara Cusack -

Join Ara in learning how to connect to your own energy body.  Both Western & Eastern practitioners agree that there is an energy system used to communicate within but rarely do we give ourselves the time to slow down and experience the flow on the inside.

This series will teach you how to connect to your own inner energetic landscape through movement, breath and meditation.  We’ll care for all our layers of being using the gentle flowing movements of Qigong and the quiet poses of Yin. There will be 5 classes in the series to reflect the 5 Elements.
(Ara was one of my teachers and I have always and still do, love her classes because of the calm energy and intelligent consideration of how to share with all bodies. The addition of her medical qigong training meddled with Yin is a fantastic melding of the 2 practices that just makes sense ans feels good. I love this class! ~ Beverly)

Unlock Your Rib "Cage" and Shoulders with Beverly Akhurst-

We call our Thoracic Cavity our Rib Cage and as our bodies move through our days we become contained by that cage. Locked in by the posture we assume working at computers, sitting in chairs and couches, and watching our cell phones. Come unlock the door to stronger shoulders and backs, a more open chest, better ROM in the rotaator cuffs and a breath no longer trapped at the top of your lungs.
The shoulder floats as a free form with the collar bone supported on the sternum and the scapula suspended by muscles to the skull, back, ribs and arms bones. Posture and lack of movement or injuries can lead the support tissues to be strained, tight, or tired and can then misalign the bones within the structure. Change your normal and find ease in your breath and body.

Class incorporates, Movement combined with Yin, Hatha, Pranayama and Meditation and teaches you the anatomy of your body.

Possible benefits: more mobility in shoulders, spine and thoracic cavity, less head, back and shoulder pain, reduced anxiety and better posture to name some.

SUMMER Session: June 25th to August 26th
8 Class Series (No Class August 23rd) Maximum 8 students
Thursdays 5:45 - 7:00 pm

Yin Powered with Beverly Akhurst -

Come and explore the duality of Yin.
"Yin and yang are relative terms, not absolutes; any phenomenon can only be yin or yang by comparison with something else. We can't point to the moon and say, "The moon is yin." Compared to the sun, the moon is yin: It's cooler and less bright. But compared to the Earth (at least from our perspective), the moon is yang: brighter, higher, and more mobile." ~ Paul Grilley
In this class we will explore Yin as the relative term of the practice. We will explore the relativity of the poses Yin to their Yang counterparts. We will explore the Yin and Yang of tissues and how their edges differ. This practice will become more "Yang" as the season changes to a more Yin like quality.
Open to all levels of student. Be ready for all possibilities.

This class will incorporate small slow movements allowing students to discover muscles that remain unused or underused and build an understanding of how to functionally utilize their anatomy. You are a student who does not like just being told what to do, you are invested in really getting to know the internal workings of your body.

Nature Bathing: Connecting with the Healing Transformative Power of Nature

In Japan and Korea the practice of Forest bathing is a national strategy for health.
It is understood through the study of and practice of ShinRin Yoku that immersing in nature in a mindful and meditative manner is a sure way to reduce stress and connect to many health benefits.
What they have found and many communities and cultures before them is that if one visits an area in nature and walks in a calm and meditative manner, some or many of the following benefits may be achieved.

Lower Blood pressure
Reduce Stress
More ability to be present and concentrate.
Improved sleep
Lowered Anxiety
Boosted Immune system functioning.

Join Beverly for a guided movement through nature. The time will be divided between silent walking meditation, mantra and sound within nature, gentle movement, and journal or sharing time. The idea of Nature Bathing is to become comfortable with doing and accomplishing nothing. To just BE within the moment.
If joining in please be prepared to either leave your phone at home or turn it off for the duration of the afternoon. Dress appropriately for the weather with good, comfortable walking footwear. We will go rain or shine. The only thing that will cancel it is an absolute monsoon or wind storm that makes it dangerous to be in the trees.
Location will either be either Lighthouse Park, Pacific Spirit Park or Stanley Park. Decided closer to the date

This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization.Yoga means union- the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yin Yoga:

Yoga which balances the more Yang like practices of our lives. Yin is a slower, deeper, more meditative practice. It can hold poses for as little as 1 minute and as long as 9+ minutes. Longer poses are used to release stagnation in the joints and fascial connections of the body. Passively settle into the poses supported by props to allow to find ease and release. Allowing the chi (life force energy) to flow. Come close to your edge and allow the mind and body to settle into the experience. If you are hyper flexible or in your 3rd trimester of pregnancy ask about other classes.

Hatha Yoga:

All yoga extends from Hatha Yoga. Ha (Sun) Tha (Moon). A balance of breath combined with posture, strength and softness. Most styles of yoga come from Hatha. You can use a Hatha practice to build strength and flexibility, a calmer mind and the ability to find steadiness within your experience. Begin with your breath and expand your practice from there.

Kundalini Lite:

A more science based practice, I teach the practice of Kundalini as a practice which works within the framework of our lives at this present moment in time. Kundalini helps create strong bodies and in short time releases the energy of the Kundalini (coiled snake of energy at the root chakra) giving individuals the ability to move into each day and each life with strength and stability. It is a strong practice that requires no previous training, just an open heart and mind. Kriyas (or sets) are combined with the chanting of mantras and/or some movement. Bring an open heart and the intent to let go of all the things that hold you back from your life.

Yoga Nidra:

Sometimes called Yoga Sleep, Yoga Nidra is a deep meditative practice.  Starting in fully supported relaxation pose you will be taken on a journey of healing and release. Slowly releasing to the space that floats somewhere between sleep and presence.  Open the deepest part of your soul to the possibilities of life, creativity and change.  Some say 1 hour of Yoga Nidra is equal to about 4 hours of sleep.

Prenatal Yoga:

Yoga for women at every stage of pregnancy. Learn how to allow for the changes happening in your body in a fun and supportive way. This is a time to be enjoyed and celebrated. Connect with your baby through the rhythm of your breath and the movement of your body. Find the strength that is within all of us so that you can be present and aware at the birth of this child who has chosen you. (Always let teachers know you are pregnant or if you have recently been pregnant so they can give the best suggestions for your body and the changes it may be going through). Please check with your doctor before attending classes, make sure they agree that Yoga would be good for you through your pregnancy.

*Almost all classes are accessible to Women who are pregnant. Check with the studio.

Vinyasa Yoga:

Vinyasa Yoga comes from Hatha but in a North American perspective is sometimes thought of as "Power" Yoga. The flow of movement is guided by the connection of breath and body allowing you to shift fluidly from one motion, or pose to the next, creating the fire within your body through a deep understanding of the internal experience. Anyone can do this, you simply connect breath to movement.  You will find that in a very short time you will be ready to progress deeper into your practice.

Restorative Yoga is a healing , relaxing yoga providing gentle, supported, opening poses. Whether you are looking to reduce the stress of a busy day, or life lived in a city, or heal, this practice will allow you to reduce strain on injuries, relieve chronic pain, or reduce stress on and within the body. If you have limited mobility this practice can be for you. Through breath, poses supported for long periods of time by many props and gentle movement you will find a place to relax deeply and find a new way to refresh and renew. Open to any ability level.
